Seems as though Sony is having more TV firmware update issues than just what we are posting about here. They just recently rolled out an update for their Dolby Vision capable TV's and apparently blew that one as well. Looks like they've got their hands full.
Yup other threads same issue slightly diff tv. It seems like one or two people said on another thread that they had similar problems and got their parts changed. They were from over a week ago, so maybe that was before Sony knew about the problem. Still waiting for them to call me back, even after I called them again.
There are some answers to your questions in the thread, or if you read it you'll see it's been said. Lots of this stuff is just reiterations of what everyone has gone through. Nothing anyone is saying is new.
They gave a time frame of mid February to the end to have it fixed. That's in the thread. My issue with the firmware is crashing with hdr content and I was waiting on a response about component swapping so that I can get one without the current firmware installed. The customer relation I called said it might be possible but I have to wait for an approval from an engineer and they'll call me back.
Well they never did. My case has been "escalated" for a week now and waiting for a call back It seems obvious that they're not going to bother with any other kind of fix. It doesn't seem like a fix is coming any time soon. Maybe if enough people complain to them, but I doubt it. At least I tried to push for a hardware swap. I returned mine and it was the best decision I made. Long answer why no other solution is allowed because the engineers are "working on an update soon" no eta though and that replacing any hardware is "not reccomended" because:: 1.
Everyone else, enjoy your beeping, crashing, or not using 4k features on your new 4k tv for the seeable future. We are working on the solution and will be rolling out an update in the near future. For the meantime, you may visit the link below for some troubleshooting steps regarding this issue. Smileylady, Sony best motion processing in the business and for that, I could never switch. No, the mods have no idea.
Just copy and paste the same answer over and over. They've been saying this for a couple of weeks now. Support, customer relations, nor the engineers knows. The article is exactly what we need. Ron, We've all been told about this bulletin many times before and for the majority of us it is useless, especially with cable boxes and an HDMI connection. You cannot manually change the cable box settings. The problem is not with our cable tv or cable boxes.
This issue started when Sony put out the last android update to our TV's back in January, I have a feeling that Sony is going the way of another company that shall not be named, where eventually these updates will reduce the functionality of your tv to the point where you'll have to buy a new one.
I bought xe because it was rated one of the best tv's of but this headache has made me completely regret that decision. I cannot believe a company this size is so lackadaisical about fixing issues they caused to their customers.
I keep on waiting and all I am told is the fix is coming soon. Please Sony, give us even a rough idea of how long we have to put up with this!
Once I get the patch if ever , I am taking my TV offline! These "updates" are an absolute joke! You can but most don't know how to do it. If you have a Motorola DVR, turn the cable box off, leave the TV on, press the cable box menu button and you should be able to get into the cable box settings. I changed the audio settings and the horrible beep, squealing and static stopped.
Once the problem is fixed, get into the menu and restore to the default settings. This worked on my Charter Arris cable box also. The sound still stutters but the beeping and crackling is gone.
Dearest gardengal, Are you serious? You're saying that if you turn the power off to the cable box, you can then get the cable box to display something on the TV! I find that very unlikely. But there's a reason "most don't know how to do it. Turn the power off? Doesn't make sense. Press the menu button?
On the cable box? On the remote? Should be able? Vague and not certain. Get to the cable box settings? Be specific. Is it a menu? A button? Something else? Changed the audio settings? To what? Again, be specific. Restore the default settings? Do you remember what the default settings were. If you're going to pretend you can fix the problem, spell out the steps and instructions correctly!
Dearest Dstine Your instructions are even worse than Gardengal's. Dearest Vectobabe, If I have time I'll write it up step by step. But the fact of the matter is that it was a lot of trial and error. And I dont feel like spending the time to do it again. I figured it out by reading this thread and searching online for instructions for my specific cable box. Until then instead of complaining on here you should do like myself and plenty of others did and figure it out for yourself!
OK, let me see if I can parse out your comments to understand them better. You wrote: If I have time Which actually means: I am a very busy person.
I don't have time to waste. Except for writting out snarky comments. You wrote: I'll write it up step by step. Which actually means: That could be hard. I don't usually think things out in such a linear fashion.
You wrote: But the fact of the matter is Which actually means: I like putting in fancy phrases that don't contribute anything to understanding the topic You wrote: that it was a lot of trial and error. Which actually means: I'm not too sure I remember what I did. It's kinda vague. You wrote: And I dont feel like spending the time to do it again. Which actually means: Yup!
You're too busy to help in a Community Support forum. Not exactly the community spirit. You wrote: I figured it out by reading this thread Which actually means: No, you didn't figure it out. If you really had figured it out, you would be able to remember the steps and write them out. What you did do is stumble on a fix.
But you're not really sure that's the correct way to do it. So you're trying to be "above it all" and tell others what to do. You wrote: and searching online for instructions for my specific cable box. Which actually means: Not even a link to the instructions? Or have you forgotten where you got them? You wrote: Until then instead of complaining on here Which actually means: I don't like having to read your comments telling me I'm not doing it right. It makes me feel small.
You wrote: you should do like myself and plenty of others did and figure it out for yourself! Which actually means: I deserve a prize for what I have done.
And I enjoy telling everyone here they aren't as smart as I am. Just to let you know. I'm not complaining. I'm being a year-old grandmother scolding you two young whippersnappers. I've been in touch with a reporter for Forbes who has written up the problem to try to get SONY to get a move on it. Of course if someone like you and gardengal were to actually give instructions, it would help.
We've all been down that rabbit hole. Im pretty sure it took you longer to post that than it did for me to figure out my cable box settings.
I would have been happy to post step by step instructions if you hadn't been so rude. Figure it out yourself. There was no need of that. This is starting to turn toxic. I'm bringing it back the topic at hand. We're five days short of it being a full month since this firmware issue started and still we've heard sh.
Still the same resonponse of sorry, understanding, and soon. So now what can we do? As I posted ealier, they won't offer any other resolution for all of us, the costomers who spent good amounts of money only to have the tv working for a short time. I wanted to let everyoine know that I too am having the issue. Tivo Box with OTA antenna. Have your TV and cable box turned on, turn your cable box off then press the menu button. A onscreen menu will appear and you will be able to change the video or audio settings.
Use the arrow buttons on your remote to scroll through the menu choices and the OK button to select. Use the remote to scroll down to audio settings and change it to PCM audio. You may need to change the audio from Dolby to stereo as well. To get out of the menu, press the off button then on again. When the fix is available for download, repeat the instructions and change the audio back. My cable box has an option at the very bottom of the screen to reset to defaults. If you want to use it you can.
We swapped out our Cisco box from spectrum cable and got a Samsung box. The extremely painful beep is replaced with relatively less annoying crackle and pop that others have complained about. Haha at least not as bad as the beep Looking forward to Sony fixing this.
So glad that some have figured out work arounds. All the annoying sounds went away. We just purchased the XBR 55xE and updated the software as prompted when we set the tv up this weekend. Random loud cracking noises now happen while watching the tv along with cracking followed by popping every time we restart after having paused the tv.
This is unbelievable and had we known would never have gotten this tv or would have delayed the update until Sony fixed the issue. We had the Sony Bravia XBR 40 inch from 10 years ago which worked fine but thought that we should update so stuck with Sony because we really liked our last tv. This really makes us reconsider Sony as a brand.
Sony, Please fix this issue as none of the work arounds have solved the issue for us. So far my experience with Sony tv support has been bad. What is infuriating is SONY is still sending out prompts to update. SONY keeps saying they are aware of the issue. There have been articles written about the problems.
There are over 17 pages of comments here. And I'm assuming there are a few people calling each day. But SONY keeps trying to ruin the sound with an update. It is one thing to send out an update when you don't know there will be a problem. But it borders on reckless behavior when you keep doing it after being told there is a problem.
This is how class-action lawsuits are won. At this point I do wish there was a lawsuit. I got as far as bringing the box upstairs and taking the batteries out of the remote. Then my better half made a very good point. This is the one that I thought was the best for the money. So, I will wait it out without Dolby sound for now. It's been a month now, hopefully won't be another.
Unfortunately the hdr is the issue for me since it crashes the tv every time. Turns out the twist ending in this ordeal was that the store manager just exchanged my tv and I got the one that was manufactored in Jan so it doesn't have the latest firmware on it! It seems to be working just fine so I think that should end this problem. Obviously I turned off auto update and just to be safe am not connected to the network.
So in the end, the store was the hero that saved the day, not Sony. Well, at least the press has picked up on this. My belief and faith in this company has been severly shaken. The whole point of paying more than most is the tight and seemless integration Apple anyone?
Rules of the industry Anyone here seriously considering a Sony TV next time you are due? Bad business Sony. Set up TV Went to rewind and got the same loud, continuous beep during the rewind process. At first, I thought a smoke detector tripped somewhere in the house! I returned set later that day and brought another home, learning at the store that there may be a software problem. New TV was initially fine, but unfortunately I failed to turn off auto updates. Needless to say There is a 15 day return policy at Best Buy.
The sales rep said not to connect to WiFi Spent 30 minutes with their support team. They were very thorough in attempting to resolve the issue, but unfortunately unsuccessful.
Very disappointed at the starting gate! Can you not exchange it again? If you do, check the back sticker to see when the manufacturer date is. You can connect to wi if, just not during set up. Turn off auto update then you should be good to connect to the network. Plus what if the new update is also problematic? I say exchange it again and keep the last good firmware. I'm sure you can relabel the last version and overwirte the current one, but hey, I'm no Sony engineer, who I'm sure is "workiing hard to get a fix out in the near future.
If I hadn't gotten this tv at such a discount, I would have stuck with the other brand. I don't think this is the first time for this tv to have firmware issue either, but they weren't as major as this. I was lucky that the store exchanged out my tv 3 months after I bought it because the store manager knew about the issue since his tv is doing the same.
If I were you, I would exchange it again. If it works out then you'll be less frustrated about it. The longer you wait, the more likely you'll get the newer shipments of tv, which is obviously not the one you want. Has there been any update of the firmware yet? This is very painful. No new firmware have been posted and I never got any updates from them.
Maybe they think if they wait long enough, people would just let it go. The anger in the forums seemed to have gone down. Even though my problem was resolved, I'm still mad seeing how long it's still going on. I've tried the PCM route, but had no success.
How did you solve your issue? My problem was fixed by me getting a new tv. I'm not allowed to talk about what happened, but it lead me to going back to the store and eventually I lucked out and after explaining it to the store, they replaced it and it happened to be one that was manufactored before the update.
You're not allowed to talk about what happened??? Did they make you sign an NDA? It was an agreement. Let's just leave it there. My point is that Sony still haven't fix it or update the consumers about the wait time. You either have to put up with their bs answers or get lucky. It's been way too long. Nothing to see here big brother Sony. I also solved the loud beeping issue by replacing my television set. Very pleased with picture and sound quality.
My dogs are happier, too. Hmmm my tv is about two years old so unlikely that best buy would take it back. That's crazy that the only solution is basically to take a hammer to it, office space style. I would hope that Sony will eventually role out a fix. I wish that tv was on sale when I had a chance to switch out the tv. Same problem here, xbr65xc and dish hopper. Think I might have a fix, or at least a band aid.
I assume this is only happening on setups where the sound is routed thru the tv or played by the tv. I used to route the HDMI thru my xbox and my audio receiver and didn't have the problem. The Xbox hdmi input however isn't 4k capable so I switched for the Olympics. Hope this helps. I use a sound bar so would have to think about how to do this to bypass.
The annoying part is when I want to watch Netflix or things through the tv. The interesting thing is when I'm watching those I don't have the high pitch. Sorry previous message was wordy. Try turning off sound leveling in the satellite receiver. I'm curious if this works. The tv may be mishandling the modified signal. It seems that you aren't working on this or it's taking longer than you thought it would. I believe the original date was middle of February. Could you please open a link on your site where we can register our name and emails so that when if?
I have stopped watching on my Bravia, and would like to know when you have a way to fix the problem. Also, I have friends who have turned off auto updates and they would like to know when it is OK to upgrade. And I'm sure the various people who have written articles on this debacle would like to send out word when it is safe to upgrade.
It would mean a lot to many of us just to see some sort of message from SONY to this community. Why do I feel I'm just whistling in the wind. I almost hate to say it but, it's been so long since I changed the settings the audio sounds fine. I noticed a big difference in the sound quality when I first changed the settings but now, it seems normal. Not good because I want the Dolby sound I paid for and expect to have. Add another one to the list. I had to turn off Dolby Digital for the sound to go away.
Audio set to PCM and no annoying sound. This is unacceptable and Sony better address this issue. A loud pop when the DVR is unpaused and a high pitched squeel at times, too. It just started recently. I took the advice of other posters and deactivated Dolby sound in a TV settings and that has worked successfully.
However, that is NOT ideal because we need Dolby. Please fix Dolby handling problem. Come on! Followed the setup and update procedure and now have the same issues. My son helped me box it up tonight and I'll be returning it to Costco tomorrow. Rather than buy something now after the return, I may just wait a while and keep watching my 10 year old Sony until there is a good solution. EDIT2: As a matter of fact the instructions included doing the update!
Is there a contact at Sony you've emailed? Sony support only reads from the same scripted answers. Anything beyond that, then they would refer you to their engineers. You can't even contact any other department directly. Support might refer you to public relations, but they also have to defer to the engineers for any hardware issues. If you make a lot of fuzz on this forum, the complaints forum, and call them and complain enough, then someone might reach out to you, depending on your situation.
I had emailed the contact listed on the web support page of Sony Canada. You say that your engineering team is aware, for over a month now? So I contacted Sony support by chat last night, they also said they were aware of the issue but couldn't help me and that I needed to send an email to support, which I did.
What did the email tell me? When others at Sony, including you, clearly say it is a TV issue. Do I schedule a service call or return the TV?
Per the other messages here you can do a temporary fix by changing the settings on your cable box to send stereo PCM instead of dolby digitlal.
But you lose surround sound. When I tried they would not it up service. They say the software issue is not related to hardware. So the only way instant fix now is to change out the tv.
I got a replacement tv. Another of the many mysteries with this is, why since this has been apparent since late January are they still pushing the "broken" update to new owners? Or why don't they roll back to the last working FW? I'm an electrical engineer computer actually , these things happen all the time.
It would be a good temporary fix while they clean up the new update. Very disappointing from what was my favorite brand To return to Best Buy and try again or wait since my Cisco box won't let me disable Dolby You could try again, but your chances of getting a tv that was made in early Jan is probably slim by now. I would just return it outright unless you got a really good deal on it.
You can wait till they fix it and buy it again then or get something else. Mine has. Personally, at this point if I could return a new purchase I'd wait till April or so when the new models come out and get the F instead. It is supposed to have the X1 extreme chipset and thus probably get Dolby Vision if they ever get the software sorted out.
But you probably aren't going to find anything with a better picture, expecially upscaling from TV quality. Tried turning off Dolby on the cable box but then I get no sound at all. Something is wrong there. Does it mean to check compatibility automatically over HDMI? Try the 'other' setting. It has nothing to do with cable boxes, etc. We all have to wait until they fix it with a new update patch.
Yes, it is broken and needs to be fixed, but if you don't input dolby digital audio format for the time being you can avoid the problem. And pretty much every input device will have a way to configure it to send stereo PCM instead, since not all of the things that they could be connected to can handle dolby digital. I know it's not ideal, but this change has not had much impact on my enjoying this television.
I recently kept getting a message on the TV that the it needs to update the firmware but I kept delaying it, and finally gave-in and tried the update. I had no internet connection router off and the TV went through the update anyway, I did not get the update. After I used it the next day, I noticed a popping sound and a loud click when changing channels. I have a directv receiver and I connected it to 2 different tv's, changed cables HDMI , the same cable and different speaker sources with no clicking or popping sound between channels, but each time the E would do the same thing when pausing the program or changing channels.
So my choices are 1. Yeah, I am not happy. How did your tv update without the internet? If you got a prompt telling you an update is ready to be installed, then the tv already downloaded the update and needed confirmation to install it. What's your firmware version? If it's the old firmware and you get popping noises, then you may be able to get a repair.
The issue is that once a tech comes out and repairs it, they're supposed to download the latest update, as per their policy. At least that's what they tell me. Using analog component cables will support HD resolution, just not 4k. But, there is also Choice 4. My Spectrum Cisco box and most others I assume automatically detect when an HDMI cable is connected and being used and prevent setting changes.
My wireless router was connected to the internet in the past, I have not used it in a while and was surprised the TV was asking me for an update. Anyway I selected the update and it went through the motions, after it was showing those funny graphics and showed the word Android then turned off, really, I was trying to see what would happen. It had a small popup window indicating that the firmware update did not complete after I turned it on the next day.
I have not got that firmware update message again. I will check on the version but I am sure it did not update. I did not have that issue with the old firmware. Thanks for the information, I will give it a try. I suspect the TV will still have a good picture. Hi lesmikesell, Thanks for the information, I turned off the Dolby Digital on the Directv and it fixed the popping and cracking noises, They are no longer there.
What have I to ask is, "what is the difference in the sound if I have this off? The difference is if you have your sound ouputted from either your box or the TV going to a surround home theater system, you will only get 2-channel PCM stereo audio L-R , not digital dolby surround. This Sony television has the following input output specs. Having enough HDMI ports is important when connecting your devices. Four ports is enough for most consumers.
The old composite style connections are hardly supported by manufacturers due to the reasoning that it is thought to be ancient input technology as it pertains to the quality of televisions of today. Newer than composite, component inputs are much more common on televisions because they can handle p quality signals.
This particular TV has wireless capabilities which means you can connect through your home router to the Internet. This gives you a multitude of possibilities through your TV.
An Ethernet port gives you a different way to connect to the Internet. Connecting through an Ethernet port is more reliable and usually gives you more speed than going wireless. All in all, the hardware of a TV has proven to be as significant as the screen of the television itself. Researching and buying the perfect TV would be next to impossible without examining the specifications.
You should always take a look at the whole TV, not just the screen size! The listed screen size can sometimes be different than the actual.
