Top review. A young Jewish boy and the extreme abuse quite hideous, alarming at times and suffering inflicted upon him during WWII by some exceptionally evil and wicked people; slightly loses traction with a few too many frying pan fire cycles to emphasise the point, a shocking experience nonetheless, albeit a very long one. Whether the world still needs this kind of stylisation of the effects of war remains debatable, as does its impact on the memories and emotions already formed over so many years and by so many.

Yes, the book was unrelenting in its depiction of the atrocities of war and man's capacity for extreme cruelty, but it had texture and nuance. Cruelty, A Primer. Any additional comments? A harrowing and beautifully written book. A tremendous book really, the kind that changes your perspective on political realities A must read -- but don't blame me for the nightmares you have afterwards. I liked the writer's style and especially enjoyed the surrealistic moments, and the narrator was odd but perfect for the piece.

I had to stop listening at chapter 8. The litany of cruelty to innocence is just too miserable to me. I was thinking, "OK, I get it already! Skip to the end This book shows, more than any that I have ever read, the need for good education everywhere. A dark, depressing, and often surreal tale of survival in Nazi-controlled Eastern Europe. He recommended reading it because The Painted Bird is an influential and controversial work of Holocaust literature and his doctorate is in that field.

He also didn't recommend reading it because it is dark and brutal and more than a little WTF. Both have a similar apocalyptic atmosphere in which the depravity of man is paramount and the desperate struggle for survival seems hopeless.

However, setting historical and Holocaust literature values aside, 'The Road' is a better book. While this is understandable given the setting and background of the work, the repetitive brutality and increasing WTF-factor ultimately undercuts the power and progress of the story. It is effective in that regard, but it certainly makes for some unpleasant reading. The narration really adds to this steady slide into despair. It is not bad narration, but it is A sort of monotone drone of tired hopelessness.

Again this adds to the overall unpleasantness, but it is strikingly appropriate to the story. It is controversial, largely due to issues with the author, and I would suggest reading up on that, as well as the author's response. Ultimately, this is a work that must be read in light of the Holocaust. On it's own there isn't really much about this book that I'd recommend, but placed in its proper context, it is clearly not insubstantial in its scope and impact.

I love Kosinski and hope more of his work shows up. But he is not for everyone. I think this is an excellent novel, very poetic, tragic and brutal. Much like Cormac's The Road it is very disturbing at times, but I think it is an important work that should be read more and not forgotten.

Stylistically it is full of poetry and symbolism, but sections can be hard to get through. I recommend it with caution. While I made it through this book - I did not enjoy it. I understand the author is making a point about the horrors of war on a civilian population - but the increasing depravity and horrid descriptions of the atrocities inflicted on animals, the protagonist, women, and a few men - were terrible to listen to.

At the end, there is no satisfying conclusion to the story and it seemed sadistic and I felt a little dirty and disgusted at having listened to it all the way through. I would NOT recommend listening to this book. There was one scene in particular where I had to go into the bathroom and retch - it was that horrific.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you? The story structure became way too apparent after just a few chapters. Boy finds a seemingly benevolent person to take care of him. That person is awful and either beats or molests him. While that person gets beaten or molested by someone else, he escapes. What could Jerzy Kosinski have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Be more imaginative than just murder and rape. The early scene with the eyes was really impressive to me and will likely be the only part that I remember a week from now. Which scene was your favorite?

Any scene where the boy is given time to really examine and explain something in a way that makes since to him was enthralling, but the book leaned far too hard on shock value. What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment? Shock up until the scene with the woman being killed by the wives of the village.

That hit "peak gross-out", and after that, it was a bit of a snooze. If you are over 40, this will probably be too much for you. If you are not, this will be nothing worse than what you have seen on the internet. The book is a detailed account of a boys very hard life during the war. Good book although some of the content was very detailed and difficult to listen to. If you reach for this book you already familiar with holocaust and you will have to make your own mind.
